Why is it so important that my child learn handwriting skills anyway? Isn’t most writing now done on computers?

Yes, we now do much of our writing on computers and electronic devices. But there are still many activities we don’t do on the computer: writing lists, completing job applications, taking notes. For college-bound students, a handwritten essay is now an SAT requirement!

Good handwriting skills serve as the foundation for language and communication skills. Learning to write also equips kids with skills and habits that lead to later success in school and life.

Lastly, writing is a form of self expression. Jotting down our personal thoughts or composing a handwritten note allows us to share our creativity with others. Besides, parents and grandparents love receiving handwritten cards and notes!

What are the key skills needed for good handwriting?
Kids must learn and practice skills that adults take for granted. Handwriting uses a set of interrelated skills involving several large and small muscle groups — gross and fine motor skills. Other key skills:

- Pencil grip
- Eye-hand coordination
- Good posture
- Body awareness
- Memory and attention
- Manual dexterity
- Organizational ability
